RESTORATION OF THE CALA CUBANITA TRAIL.
The regional Department for the Environment has reopened the three kilometre Cala Cubanita trail to the public. Running parallel to the coastline along the whole of its length, from the Alcossebre lighthouse to the Cala Cubanita cove, the trail is one of the most popular routes in the Serra d’Irta nature park and, being flat, is suitable for walkers of all
abilities. Cala Cubanita cove is in La Font de la Parra, on the border between Alcalà de Xivert and Peñíscola. Surrounded by vegetation, it is a good spot for watching seabirds. Just before the cove is El Serradal beach, which is strung with a line of boulders at one end.
Other works undertaken by the Department for the Environment in the Serra d’Irta park include the recuperation of the Bassa de l’Ametler pond, in the Vall de l’Ametler valley within the municipal boundary of Alcalà de Xivert. Previously choked with mud and reeds, the pond has now been transformed by a team of workers into a habitat for amphibians and a watering hole for local wildlife. The Bassa de l’Ametler pond is set among Mediterranean woodland, including pine trees, in an area that is popular with visitors to the Serra d’Irta – the Vall de l’Ametlar valley –, which is close to a forestry track accessible to cyclists and ramblers.
